Tang Prize founder lauded for his vision at banquet for 2016 laureates

Taipei, Sept. 25 (CNA) A board member of the Tang Prize Foundation praised Taiwanese entrepreneur Samuel Yin (尹衍樑), who established the awards in 2012, for his vision and selfless donation in support of education.
At a banquet in honor of the 2016 Tang Prize laureates and their representatives in Taipei Sunday, C.V. Chen (陳長文), a lawyer, said he was impressed by Yin’s vision and his constant efforts to promote culture and education over the past decades.
Those efforts include making donations for education, setting up the Tang Prize and promising to donate 95 percent of personal wealth for public good, Chen said in a speech at the event in his capacity as a guest of honor.
“Mr. Yin’s Tang Prize has complemented the fields that Noble Prize fails to cover,” Chen said.
The biennial Tang Prize, first awarded in 2014, honors people with distinguished achievements in four fields – sustainable development, biopharmaceutical science, Sinology, and rule of law.
This year’s laureates include Arthur H. Rosenfeld, former commissioner of the California Energy Commission, who won the prize for sustainable development; and Jennifer A. Doudna and Feng Zhang (張鋒) of the United States, and Emmanuelle Charpentier of France, who shared the prize for biopharmaceutical science.
Others are American scholar William Theodore de Bary, who won the prize for Sinology; and Louise Arbour of Canada, a former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, who was honored with the prize for rule of law.
The banquet was held at the Grand Hotel following the award ceremony, which took place at the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall.
